About Ryan

Ryan A. Henyard (he/him/his) is an educator, interdisciplinary artist and cultural organizer based in Southeast Michigan.

He currently serves as the Director of Faculty & Education Initiatives in Workforce Development at the Association of American Medical Colleges, where he heads various leadership development programs designed around the needs of faculty underrepresented in academic medicine. Ryan is a deeply rooted community catalyst, co-creating art, organizations, learning experiences and opportunities that elevate equity and center the needs and dreams of marginalized people. 

Ryan strives to alleviate suffering through his cultural organizing, working in community with other leaders, activists and artists to build just futures through co-liberation. A Champions for Change fellow, Ryan organizes against police violence and towards creating a culture of care as a founding member of the Coalition for Re-envisioning Our Safety, and as part of the design team creating Care-Based Safety, a nonprofit organization creating the first unarmed, non-police response program in the state of Michigan. Ryan is also a trustee for Avalon Housing, a permanent supportive housing non-profit that serves the holistic needs of neighbors. 

As a person of many passions, Henyard utilizes writing, art and creativity to expand imaginations and create meaningful change. Through his conservation photography, Ryan works to reclaim wild spaces for BIPOC, Queer & disabled communities and break down barriers to equity in the great outdoors. Ryan combines a wide range of interdisciplinary skills and experiences to create and contribute to impactful projects with a focus on dismantling barriers through transformative love.
